iGCSE ChemistryMetals. STUDY. PLAY. Alloy. The extraction of Iron. Extracted from the ore hematite using coke (carbon), limestone (calcium carbonate) and the hematite (iron ore). 1) C + O2 CO2 Carbon reacts with oxygen to give carbon dioxide. 2) C + CO2 2CO Carbon reacts with the carbon dioxide to give carbon monoxide.
3Iron ore is used to make iron and steel eg haematite and magnetite. Iron is produced (extracted) in a blast furnace by reducing iron oxides with carbon and it is the carbon that removes the oxygen from the iron oxides the carbon is known as the reducing agent. Coke is a cheap and readily made reducing agent.
3Iron is only a moderately reactive metal but it is less reactive than Carbon. Because of this is can be smelted displaced from Iron compounds by heating with Carbon (coke). Iron compounds are found in rocks we call rocks with high percentages of Iron compounds Iron ore.

Name one other raw material added to the blast furnace. [1] (b) A series of reactions occurs in a blast furnace during the extraction of iron from hematite. Describe these reactions.
This page looks at the use of the Blast Furnace in the extraction of iron from iron ore, and the conversion of the raw iron from the furnace into various kinds of steel. The common ores of iron are both iron oxides, and these can be reduced to iron by heating them with carbon in the form of coke
Iron Pure iron does not have a variety of uses. But alloys of iron such as steel are highly useful. Alloys are nothing but a mixture of different types of metals. Alloys of Irons are used to make cars, nails, bridges etc. We are going to discuss in details about the different types of iron in the extraction of the iron part.

Extraction of Metals. Extraction of Iron. Iron is extracted from its ore in the blast furnace. The main iron ore is called haematite. Haematite is iron(III) oxide Fe 2 O 3. The iron ore contains impurities, mainly silica (silicon dioxide). Limestone (calcium carbonate) is added to the iron ore which reacts with the silica to form molten calcium silicate

Extraction of Iron Iron is extracted from its chief ore Haematite Fe 2 O 3.The various steps involved in the process are as follows 1. Crushing The ores are crushed in jaw crusher and powdered in ball mills. 2. Concentration The crushed ore is washed with steam or cold water to remove clay and sand. The washed ore is then concentrated by electromagnetic separation process.

Describe the essential reactions in the extraction of iron in the blast furnace. An ore is a rock from which metals can be extracted. The main ore of iron is hematite, which contains large amounts of iron(III)oxide. It is reduced by carbon to for iron, but this takes place in a huge blast furnace.
Extracting iron from iron ore using a Blast Furnace. The common ores of iron are both iron oxides, and these can be reduced to iron by heating them with carbon in the form of coke. Coke is produced by heating coal in the absence of air. The most commonly used iron ores are hematite, \(Fe_2O_3\), and magnetite, \(Fe_3O_4\).
