The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) was established in 1913 by the colonial administration under the Directorship of Sir Albert Kitson to investigate and establish more exactly the extent and quality of both existing and yet undeveloped areas of mining activity and to prepare for their exploitation. The first office of the Department was located at the River Ankobra Junction in Prestea.
The geology of Ghana is primarily very ancient crystalline basement rock, volcanic belts and sedimentary basins, affected by periods of igneous activity and two major orogeny mountain building events. Aside from modern sediments and some rocks formed within the past 541 million years of the Phanerozoic Eon, along the coast, many of the rocks in Ghana formed close to one billion years ago or older leading to five different types of gold deposit formation, which gave the region its former name Gold Coast.
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has said it is conducting comprehensive investigations at the regions with mineral deposits to be blocked for responsible mining. The move, is part of the Community Mining Scheme and the MultiSectorial Mining Integrated Project aimed at collaborating

However, the same reference adds that Gold mining was carried out by the natives for thousands of years before the Phoenicians sailed there. Thousands of years later the yellow mineral is still, it appears, in abundance at identified sites, and there are currently 72 mining projects in Ghana owned by32 mining companies.
Exploration History Reports of gold mining in the Upper West Region of Ghana date back to the 1920's and 1930's, when the Gold Coast Geological Survey recorded numerous gold occurrences while mapping in the area, although they noted that at the time there was relatively little artisanal activity in the region compared to southern Ghana.

Ghana requires a particular method of setting up mineral purchasing and export company with a licence from the minerals commission to deal in gold trading and export.
on countries sharing the Birimian Greenstone Belts and, while mature mining countries like Ghana and Mali continue to lead the way in gold production, others are gaining ground as investors turn their attention to lessexplored areas. While gold remains the focus for mining investment into West Africa, recognition of the regions more diverse
