Mining. Groote Eylandt is part of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve. GEMCO, a South32 / Anglo American plc joint venture, operates a large manganese mine near the community of Angurugu. In operation since the early 1960s, the mine produces more than 3.8 million tonnes annually about a quarter of the world's total.
3Mar 21, 20180183;32;The roads on Groote Eylandt that dont lead to the mine (Groote Eylandt produces a quarter of the worlds manganese) are all fiercely corrugated red dirt trails. But they lead to places Nicks only just discovering, often just days before I do (and where else on Earth does that happen?)
GEMCO is one of the largest and lowestcost manganese ore producers in the world. Its attributes include highgrade ore, opencut mining operations, its own port facilities located at Milner Bay only 16km from mining operations, and its close proximity to Asian export markets.

The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major nonmanganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite. Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on xray diffraction analysis.
The Groote Eylandt manganese mine has been in operation since 1965, and has produced more than 115 million tonnes of manganese ore and concentrate to June 2018. The mine is operated by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd (GEMCO), which is majority owned by South 32
Groote Eylandt Commissioned in 1965. The Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO) was commissioned in 1965 to mine high grade manganese ore. The mining method is undertaken by open cut strip mining. Once the ore has been removed the mined out area is backfilled with previously stored overburden and top soil.
The Groote Eylandt manganese deposit is located on the island of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory, Australia, some 50 km from the coast of Arnhem Land and 650 km ESE of Darwin. Groote Eylandt lies on the eastern margin of the Proterozoic McArthur Basin.

These were found to be nearly twice the number of plants identified by Langkamp, Ashton and Balling (1981) as growing on a manganese ore outcrop on Groote Eylandt. Comparisons between the tailings and ore outcrop, suggest that physical impedence to plant establishment and growth on the ore outcrop, rather than the manganese levels is the reason
Few other mines have a location quite like our Northern Territory manganese mine, on the island of Groote Eylandt, next to the pristine waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Australias north. We have a long history on Groote Eylandt, with mining starting here more than half a century ago and a processing plant commissioned on the island not long after.
