Overview

The city was founded in the 18th century by Zaporozhian Cossacks. Kryvyi Rih in Ukrainian literally means quot;Crooked Hornquot; or quot;Curved Bendquot;. According to local legend, the city was founded by a quot;crookedquot; (Ukrainian slang for oneeyed) Cossack named Rih. But, records predating the founding of the city refer to the area by the same name. It appears based on the shape of the landmass formed by the confluence of the river Saksahan with the Inhulets.
